Distance covered 15.9Nm

After the longer passage the previous day we were going for something short today, which gave us a chance to have a look round Byxelkrok (there wasn’t much to see) and also catch up with blogs and emails, as the wifi was excellent for a change.

Our destination, Sandvik, was south down the coast of Oland, and it was a pleasant motorsail, with the promised Easterlies containing too much South to make sailing easy.

Entering the harbour at Sandvik on the leading line

When we arrived there were no other visiting yachts in the harbour so we had our choice of berths, and then we went ashore to kill some time before the harbour master appeared. Oland is known as a windy island and has many old windmills. Apparently in the second half of the 19th century there were 2000 windmills.  The one at Sandvik is supposed to be one of the largest examples of a Dutch style post mill in Scandinavia (24 metres across the sail and 8 storeys high into the cap)

The mill drives 5 grinding stones

Today’s insect on the road up to the mill.

The stretch of coast where Sandvik is situated is known as the stone coast and there is a stone cutting workshop North of the harbour.

Stone quarrying along the coast

Moorglade on her own in the deserted harbour (when we were eating 3 boats came in in quick succession and surrounded us)

There were more camper vans than boats

On a stone coast I guess these substitute for sand castles

The pilot book warned us about youth swimming in the harbour entrance
