Yesterday afternoon and night were all about rain
and electric storms. Heavy rain but the lightning was flashing across the sky
around and not threatening us. The wind came up out of the south west in the
evening, but died completely in the very early morning, and we motored for an
hour before it filled in from the NE. The change of wind direction and high
pressure has brought much nicer conditions. I'm late doing the blog because for
once we lingered in the cockpit after lunch chatting, surrounded by drying kit.
It is just how sailing should be at present but the next few days are hard to
call. We have not made far enough East to pick up the developing SW air
stream so we will be left in a calm patch. No doubt our extra fuel will come in
handy.
I'm sad to say I have to report a death on board. A
swallow took refuge on board last evening in the heavy rain and after drying out
made several attempts to carry on. He found a sheltered corner under the spray
hood for the night but on John's watch, despite the comforting words of the
watch keeper he passed away. Jim took the next watch and after confirming death
buried the little fellow at sea. He said it was very dignified.
The calmer conditions are improving appetites and
making cooking easier, so now we can start getting through all those stores we
took on board in Marion. Jim has just taken the last of our cottage pies out of
the bottom of the fridge, still frozen hard.
