The passage from Salem to Gloucester was
uneventful. Once clear of the Salem channel it is a straight line into
Gloucester Harbour with nothing to worry about. The wind was a light NE, which
put it pretty much on the nose, so we motorsailed in the warm
sunshine.
By the time we got to Gloucester the wind had
freshened a bit as we headed for the entrance to the Blynman Canal. Ahmet the
Winthrop YC dockmaster had made the passage through the canal and Annisquam
River sound straightforward but the pilot book had warnings of 7Kt currents
through the narrow bridge and sailboats being swept into the bridge. As we would
be approaching the bridge at max flood, I chickened out and headed into
Gloucester harbour instead so we could time our run up the canal for a slacker
tide. It is not a very attractive harbour and after being told no moorings
were available and that the only anchorage was very dirty mud we decided to take
a buoy in SE Harbour. This was perhaps the wrong choice as we ended up a very
long dinghy ride back to town and as the nearby beaches were designated swimming
beaches no landing was allowed. However the afternoon passed pleasantly enough
with tae and cakes and time for reading, chatting and watching the sailing boats
go by. Somewhat surprisingly one of the dinghies sailing by was a Mirror Dinghy,
one of the old wooded ones.

Some buildings were in better shape than this one
I wonder how this little Mirror got
here
Time to relax
