It is not far from Winthrop to Marblehead, one of America's premier yachting harbours, so we had time for a gentle start to the day and to go alongside to fill our water tanks before heading out at 12:30. The wind was light and close on our bow so we motorsailed most of the way. However by 14:30 the wind had strengthened and veered a little so we were able to sail the rest of the way. While sailing towards Marblehead Neck past Great Pig Rocks a whale surfaced may be 200 yards in front of us heading South. It is hard to judge but I think it was just a little shorter than the boat. We spotted it again on its next surfacing but by then it was a long way away. Unfortunately although it was well within range the moment passes so quickly that we have no photos to record the event.
We motored up the very crowded harbour threading our way through the 2000 moored boats and then hailed Boston Yacht Club who quickly found us a mooring for the night. Unfortunately when we set off in the dinghy to explore ashore it started leaking oil again and as I did not want to be seen to be polluting the harbour we returned to Moorglade and I had another go at fixing the problem. The weather by now was threatening rain so we postponed our trip ashore until the following morning and settled down to a nice dinner aboard and a dvd.
