The cruise book informed us there
would be a race over part of the course of today’s passage, however as we all
assembled at the start line it was apparent that there was no wind so,
after much drifting about, the race was abandoned before the start and we all
motored off across the bay. The day’s destination offered a choice of anchorages
or marinas, but we had been invited to raft with Kevin and Joan on Grace in Long
Haul Creek close by the venue for the evening party, Miles River Yacht Club.
We wanted to go to one of the marinas in St
Michaels for a much needed pump out and considered anchoring off in order to
visit the little, well regarded maritime museum. However the day was very hot
still and humid so after pumping out, replenishing the ice in the beer box,
dumping the rubbish, and topping up with water we headed back round the corner
to our anchorage and Grace. Ted and Joe were planning to dinghy back to the
museum but I knew that the Yacht Club had a swimming pool, I could feel it
beckoning. In the end it was agreed that no-one could be bothered to lift the
dinghy engine down, so we all adjourned to the pool with Kevin and Joan.
It was great to see the effort the Miles
River Club was making for young people. They must have had around 60 Optimists
on the water in organised groups as well as Lasers and some bigger dinghies. It
did mean the pool was quite crowded and the showers rather well used, but that
felt a small price to pay in the face of the enthusiasm of the kids and the
helpers.
The evening saw the Commodore’s dinner,
another amazing, well organised feast and the occasion of the presentation by
the Brits of the gifts they had brought for the club and its officers.
Moorglade's crew appreciated the thought and effort that had gone into the
George III tankard mounted with a contemporary King's Shilling which was
presented to the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake to be awarded annually for an
event during their cruising calendar for which there were no hard
feelings.
This club does socialising with
