We have been here for 4 days now and come to know this city quite well. The old Roman city is tangible in so many ways.....from the initial surreality of crossing the footbridge over the main railway line which runs past the marina, only to pass the Roman Amphitheatre which backs onto the western side of the railway, much as the Roundhouse does so in north London, to the main line north, just outside Euston!

Then there is the Roman Circus...the elongated oval racetrack from the first century. Much has been built over or incorporated into the city, but the outline is still distingushable, and today, we visited the vaults beneath the ancient stands from which up to 125000 Romans would have watched the races. The whole place is an archeologists dream.

We also visited the Tarragona Historical Museum and the Cathedral and associated museum, and the cafes outside each. It’s early September but still blisteringly hot by day, but more bearable at night. Thank goodness for our fans on board. The poor mans aircon has saved us from melting!

As well as brushing up on our history, we have eaten well, drunk less, except water, and covered miles each day on foot. Karen has also finished the 3rd week of her walking and running regime and has been jogging along the harbour wall on alternate evenings.

We have now decided not to return to the Balearic islands, preferring instead to retrace our steps to Gibraltar and Portugal along the coast of Spain....partly for timing reasons, but also beacause there simply is no wind in the Med to speak of, apart from afternoon sea breezes, so going offshore guarantees additional hours on the engine.

And as keen readers of these pages will have gleaned, Persephones engine has something akin to a preservation order on it.....but has not had the central starring role it has enjoyed in our notes in the past.

All good here.
