After the return trip down the Rio Guadiana with Anna and Michael, and a couple of nights in the marina at Villa Real on the Portuguese side of the estuary, we set sail for the Isla Culatra in the river estuary at Faro. The sail down, a distance of some 35 miles was downwind and we set the spinnaker for some of the way, although the wind rather let us down after a few hours.

So the entry into the pool at Faro was under engine, and with a rising tide. We edged gently into these previously unvisited waters, at times with only a few inches of water under our keel, until we found the anchorage opposite Olhao.

The spot was almost perfect, with a superb sunset over the sandy island of Culatra to the west.

Next morning, the four of us went ashore to explore the island. There are no cars there, just a fishing village and some holiday accommodation, plus a fantastic, seemingly endless beach to the west, with, on this occasion, plenty of rolling surf.

A few miles later, and explored out, we returned to the village for a late lunch of various fresh fish....swordfish, sea bass, squid etc. All very good.

A couple more nights at the anchorage prepared us for the next trip.....a short hop around to Vilamoura!
