We are in Ibiza! The sail here from Denia was a good deal faster than we expected, starting with a windward beat in big lumpy seas and 13 knots of wind as we left at 0630, and a short period of motor sailing as the wind died to 7 knots, but the waves stayed short and steep, boat stoppers.

Around 0930, we sailed out of the miniature low pressure system centre and enjoyed a new 13 knot breeze from the south east, tacked onto starbard and flew along the rhumb line to the harbour entrance, topping 8 knots regularly as the sea state abated in the lee of Ibiza. Visibility was not great, and we could not see the island until we were within about 5 miles....reminiscent of misty, cloudy sailing conditions in the UK.

Round the corner and into the big bay at San Antonio, sails down and our 5th attempt at the Mediterranean mooring, and we are in our new home for this week. We arrived just after 4. 60 miles in 9.5 hours. Next door are Drift Away, a Starlight 39 from Liverpool, last seen in Lagos in 2016. G&T’s on board Drift Away and then an evening foray into the town.

Well, our first impressions? Our generation is not well represented in the transient population here. Nor do we have enough tattoos! This must be the tattoo capital of the world. Bars are full and each has a tout to boost attendance. Nobody is over 25. There are bright lights, apparently well known clubs are in evidence and the word is that their confidence is such that prices are very high indeed. Keep reading these pages to see if we sample their wares first hand.

We had a lovely curry with our new friends, Drift Away next door, and, unlike the rest of Ibiza, an early night!

Today, we are going to explore the town more fully. Stand by for the next report.
