We have heard only good things about the anchorages
in Formentera, so have come to see for ourselves.
Yesterday, we enjoyed a very gentle, thankfully
mostly upwind sail in 5 to 7 knots of wind after filling up with diesel at Sant
Eulalia. The setting was near perfect, with azure sky and sea. But passing
Ibiza town was difficult as the traffic as heavy with very fast motor boats and
ferries, all kicking up mountainous wash, so we too, were forced to motor sail
for a while, until we found flatter water. Definitely no sign of any failure in
the Spanish economy near here, as the minimum requiement for a self rspecting
boating weekender is around the 1m Euro mark!
Perseverence paid off for us as we passed through
the passage between Ibiza and Formentera, called the Freo Grande, and as we
sailed across the bay of Espalmador the wind increased to around 11 knots.
Lovely.
A couple of tacks around the little headland at
Punta Gabina and we entered the bay at Sahona. It looked busy, so at first we
had doubts as to whether we would find a nice spot to anchor, but as we gently
motored in after dopping sails, a prime position just off the beach availed
itself.
This is just like the Caribbean. Beautiful
aquamarine blue clear water, 4 to 5 metres deep....and so inviting, I had my
first swim of he year!
Only one tiny litle drawback impacts upon the
idyll....and that is the enduring latin exuberance of some sections of the local
boating community and their preference to play somewhat incongruent music from
their speedboats very loud. But they slip way as evening falls and leave us
yotties in the peace and quiet to enjoy the fabulous
sunset.
