Double handed Fastnet Day 2 - 1320 BST MONDAY 13th August

Last night was good for us! 8-13 knots of breeze,
comfortable and fast. From what we can see on AIS... it looks like we've made
progress! We've lost sight of some other sigma 38's (focussing on our 'race
within a race'), but we feel good and appear to have dropped the ones we had
nipping at our transom.... FOR NOW. In the mean time, it does feel as if we
'pounced' like I said we would!
You may have gleamed from yesterday's
blog entry that we opted to head offshore at Portland -
primarily to avoid the adverse tide. I think that was
a good call in the end, as Pandanova lost out to
us there, and they had been some way ahead of us.
We are having fairly long off-watches... around 3-4
hours last night, although yesterday was a bit full on - so may explain
extra fatigue. The sun has come out and we are happily going along.. pretty much
due West and aiming at the Scillies... on what feels like the south side of the
fleet.
Breeze largely averaging 10-13 kts -
perfect. In other news, I awoke from my down time with a
hangover. Although I'd love to convince you (for comedic
purposes) that we were up all last night and 'on the beers,'
regrettably being up all night with a significant lack of hydration was the
real cause. One of my mottos I tend to live by is "hydrate or die" (even in the
office), so to wake up with a headache was pretty schoolboy. Like all
good hangovers, it can be cured by a lot of water, and
an all-day breakfast. Apparently it doesn't even matter if
the breakfast has been boiled in the bag. Going for a sail also
helps hangovers, I find.
Another highlight was being rolled by an IRC1
boat from Belgium. That doesn't sound like a
highlight, but it was particularly nice to roll them back an hour
or so later! We are very happy changing gear in this variable
pressure.
Keeping on keeping on. Sailing high and
fast!
