The EJ's Voyage

Arrived last night in Key West. We have been
delayed in Miami because of bad weather and ended up staying 2 nights instead of
one. These cold fronts bring Southerly winds gusting 50 to 60 kts! A bit too
much for our liking!
We therefore left Miami on Saturday morning by
beautiful sun and blue sky. However the wind never turned West-North-West as it
should have. It still hasn't turned Northerly today! Anyway we had good wind
reaching to start with and then fetching. We took the inside the reef route,
i.e. followed the Hawk channel all the way down. We stopped when it just about
got dark in Indian Key. We were the only boat in the bay. We dropped our new
anchor and it held the boat very well. It remained very windy all night so we
both slept in the cockpit to keep an anchor watch. But all was ok.
Same sailing condition yesterday although the
forecast said that the wind would drop and turn Northerlies. That never
happened. But it meant that we covered the 74nm to Key West in 9 and 1/2 hours.
Not bad.
We are moored in The Galleon Marina. Not sure when
we will leave for Cuba. We'll have to see when the wind will finally be
favourable for the crossing.
Beautiful blue sky today. I am off for a run so
will give you more news later.
Love
Catherine and Mike
