So, we did Marblehead to Portsmouth in one hit at
the end and had a good sail. Finding a mooring buoy proved a bit difficult as
all marinas pretended to be full but Mike being persistent as he is kept on
calling Portsmouth Yacht club and got a huge buoy right in front of the club.
The club is located on New Castle Island. Not many other boats around on
the other buoys so we don't quite know what the fuss was all about. The
yacht club is very cute and is not licensed for alcohol so it is a "bring your
own" policy which caught us unaware the first night when we went ashore for a
drink.
Went on a long run the following morning and
discovered the place. New castle Island is very very nice indeed. Obviously an
affluent place. In the afternoon we took the dinghy across the river to visit
Portsmouth. Buzzing tourist town. Mainly old brick houses which is a change
from what we have seen so far. The trip back to the boat was eventful
because of extremely strong tide and current and we all got very soaked! Mike
needed Diesel engine oil and had a hard time finding any in all of Portsmouth
until a very kind local offered him a lift to a nearby hardware store. Even so
they didn't have the correct oil but it did the job.
Left early in the morning for Portland. We have
reached Maine! Flat calm sea, hardly any wind but good trip. Got to South Port
Marina and treated ourselves to the luxury of a docking in a marina! So we
promptly washed the decks, did the laundry and showered ourselves! Nice place
here. Very friendly and helpful people, very clean and tidy. Had dinner onboard.
Went to the supermarket with Cindy this morning and
as usual bought far more than intended so we came back looking like little
donkeys with all our bags!
Good wifi connection too so we have caught up with
calls on Skype, emails etc.
Off this afternoon to Boothbay Harbor and to Camden
probably the day after. That's where we will have some work done in the boatyard
and hopefully get our generator repaired at last. We also consider lifting the
boat out of the water at the same time to apply a well needed coat of
antifouling.
Fantastic weather. Very hot. And I am
referring to the weather here, not to the Americans! :-)
Got an email this morning from our dear friend
Martin B. and it looks like he got himself into a bit of a trouble working in
his garden. He fell in his pond and got something in his eye. So even though he
is always ever so rude to me and I hate him with a passion :-), we wish him
full recovery and hope he is ok.
Hugs to all
Catherine and Mike
