                | A very wet and windy day today. We tried
to leave Newport last Tuesday but thick fog in the harbour entrance made us
change our mind and we spent the following two days on a mooring in
Jamestown,RI, where despite the fog we had a good time. It is a small and
attractive village. We went for brunch at a "Slice of Heaven", walked the
streets, bought lobsters, went for a run (or at least I did), visited Mariette
and enjoyed a few glasses of wine on her deck... But yesterday the sun was out when we woke up so
Mike decided to take our chance and leave for Cuttyhunk
MA, westernmost of the islands chain below Cape Cod. It has got its
name for the Indian word meaning "land's end". It was discovered in 1602 by
English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold who was "ravished" by its beauty. We
arrived by about 3PM and anchored in the inner harbour despite the very
narrow entrance, low depth and boats moored everywhere. Went ashore for a walk. Most of Cuttyhunk is privately owned so we
had to keep to the paved roads. Spectacular views. Photos attached. Left this morning in the sun but the weather
rapidly changed and by the time we got to New Bedford bay we had 35kts of wind
and heavy rain! We therefore took shelter in Fairhaven Shipyard and are now
securely moored alongside a dock for the night. It feels like luxury to be able
to just step ashore instead of having to take the dinghy or a launch and to have
non limited supply of water and electricity! Weather permitting we will go to
New Bedford Yacht Club tomorrow in South Dartmouth and take up a mooring there.
Our windlass is giving us some grief so Mike will
have to tackle that problem next. It is a good thing he can do pretty much
everything onboard! Weather is improving slightly tonight. Some clearer
patches in the sky. It is not cold but it certainly doesn't feel like
summer. Going ashore tonight for dinner as it is Martine
and her friend's last night on board. They are off to New York tomorrow and back
to Brussels on Monday. That's it for now. Hugs to all Catherine and Mike |
