Half time at the Bull racing and the entertainment was traditional Balinese music and dance. Very different from anything we have seen so far among the other islands in Indonesia. Bali really is a very different culture, predominantly Hindu, an island of rice farmers. The first orchestra consisted of traditional gongs and drum accompanied by ladies beating on wooden troughs with rice winnowing poles. The second was traditional Balinese gongs and gamelan (hollow bamboo tubes hit with wooden or metal hammers). The dances too were very different, with carefully choreographed facial and hand movements as well as traditional steps. The girls are so elegant and delicate in their movements. Their performances always ended by inviting members of the audience to get up join in, rule one: never sit in the front row …………..
