We had a good wind most of the way from Ocean City to Newport but as we
approached Long Island it died away leaving us to motor for the last eight
hours. There was a lot of traffic, mainly fishing boats that made the
night watches hard work as we negotiated our way past them safely.
During the first night at sea Claire, who was down in the galley, shouted
to say that the automatic forward bilge pump was running and there was a lot of
water in the heads. I dashed down fearing we’d sprung a leak but it was
only a tap fitting that had come apart during one the boat’s more violent rolls
and was draining our precious drinking water into the bilges! It was soon
temporarily fixed and we will find a more permanent solution here in
Newport.
We haven’t been ashore yet but we’ve already seen some very impressive
yachts in this harbour that is probably the equivalent of our Cowes.
