The Ditch
After a night anchored in Fort Pierce (Fort Pierce is probably most famous for being the birth place of the Navy Seals during WW-II) swinging in the strong current we departed for another long day in the “Ditch” heading for Cape Canaveral (54Nm).
During the first part we needed to pass several low altitude bridges that either open on demand (VHF Ch 09) or every half hour. We were lucky in timing the bridge openings but learned by trial and error that loosing concentration only for a minute getting out of the dredged channel you risk getting stuck. As seen from the chart picture we are just out of the channel and got stuck in the mud. Fortunately we managed to get off the bank with full power in reverse with a rising tide and swell from passing boats.
After that incident we immediately subscribed to BoatUS were membership entitles you to have free towing should you get stuck (otherwise extremely costly).
A sad reminder of things going wrong are all wrecks along the way.
