Heading to the guestharbour for a place advised by the harbourmaster I saw something glimmering through the darkness. Using the handheld searchlight a long rope closing the whole harbour appeared in the darkness. Going to full reverse we managed to stop just in time for not crashing our rigging into the rope. Drifting freely we mapped the surrounding with the searchlight and found the ship from Gotlandsbolaget was tied up with two long ropes through the darkness blocking the whole guestharbour !!?
No warninglights attached and no other signs of this very dangerous action.
We managed to find place over night in the pilotharbour and the day after contacted the harbourmaster about (in my opinion) this quite serious event. From our talk with the harbourmaster we learned to know that this is an ongoing conflict between the harbour and the powerful Gotlandsbolaget. The conflict now is on a regional level and according to Gotlandsbolaget they allways warn on VHF /Securitè through Stockholm radio when closing the harbour with ropes before an approaching gale. My question back is-who of all mariners manage to listen through all securite`messages 24/7/365 ??
Nevertheless coming ashore in Visby was a charming experience. Mercedes has never been here before and for me it was nice to be here off highseason. Still lot`s of people were found to be out on cafeterias/restaurants and with all shops open. The city itself is very charming with it`s ringwall surrounding the city since the 12th century.
The plan is to rent a car to see the island as well as a visit to sailingfriend Markus Selin currently visiting his summerhouse on east side of Gotland.
