A great experience from cruising in southern Europe and the Mediterranean is encountering cultures resistant to the 24/7 society (eg. Spain,Portugal,Italy and Greece). Emanating from the great country in the west, the 24/7 society has spread like a plague in my lifetime with fast food chains like McDonalds,KFC and Pizza Hut. With the US and U.K on top of fast food consumption, the link to obesity is crystal clear.
Carloforte can stand as a metaphor for southern Europe. Here you don´t buy meat, fish, bread or fruit/vegetables in the supermarket. You go to the bakery and buy fresh bread, the butcher for meat, and the pescheria for fresh fish. It used to be like that in my homecountry too,but Swedes are generally easy to influence and today Sweden is one of the bigger consumers of fast food in Europe.
In Italy there´s a movement against the 24/7 society with "slow cities" spread all over the country. The problem is that fast pace and 24/7 society increases merchandise which promotes money production and in the end it might all (as usual ) come down to economy.
If so a slow pace life might just be to expensive and a thing of the past for most people.
Mercedes made a delicious Pasta Vongole all based on fresh produce (also the pasta) from Carloforte. Being Gallega (Galician),this is the way she´s used to cook, but for me being Swedish I would need to bring her to some few exclusive places in Stockholm to find the ingredients.
