Realizing the shaft was stuck in the thrust bearing we brought it out and took it apart. The thrustbearing looked good and now the propellershaft was easy to push forward. Once having the cutlass bearing out we found the rubber dislodged and broken forward of the bearing meaning it could have occluded the circulation of water necessary to lubricate the shaftseal. That in turn could lead to overheating and leakage of the seal.
Obviously we have been lucky and a good advise is to change cutlass bearing every 3.000hr (this one now had 3.800 hrs on it)
