After a day of preparations we learned that bad weather was approaching. At this time of the year it normally means an enforced Meltemi (strong northerly winds blowing typically July and August). Prognosis from Windy and Predictwind showed northwesterly winds gusting up to 45kts and the majority of cruisers in the area decided to stay in Lakki Port (either in Leros Marina or anchored in the bay).
We decided to relocate to the eastern coast of Leros in the bay of Panteli also well protected from the Meltemi. It only took us a couple of hours to round the southern tip of Leros still with moderate seaway from a Meltemi under build up.
Once in Panteli Bay we found a free mooring and was assisted by the harbourmaster.
Panteli Bay is more beautiful than Lakki Port with several nice tavernas by the beach and Panteli Castle overlooking the bay and allthough with more tourists Leros in general has not yet been struck by masstourism in the way you find in Mykonos,Santorini,Paros and so on.
The castle was built in Byzantine times (around 1.000 a.d),and later enforced by the Knights of St John to protect the islanders from the Ottomans. It´s well worth a visit (either by foot or car) with fantastic view all over Leros and enlightened after sunset it´s very impressive from the anchorage.
We spent five days waiting out the Meltemi in Panteli Bay,swimming, visiting the castle, and travelling the island. For every day we learned to appreciate Leros more and more.
