Diving West Caicos
Diving Turks&Caicos in general is good !
Circumstances are in some ways exceptional. The whole Caicos bank is huge and shallow and once out in open sea depths rapidly reach 2.000m. This creates amazing drop offs with all that it means of sea life concentrated along the walls.Whales migrate through the area and large predators (mainly sharks)are ever present along the walls.
With great diving easily accessible West Caicos is an obvious choice.
With a plateau of sand at 15m below Dora Mac we could descend from the bath platform and easily reach the drop off behind the boat. With lot’s of life along the wall we immediately became aware of two 2m grey reef sharks approaching us. They spent a long time slowly circling around us showing now signs of agressivity, only curiosity.
Since our dive compressor onboard only manage to fill a bit over 100atm we needed to finish our dives far to early and head back to the boat.
We did two dives in West Caicos and both considered this better diving than Bonaire with the combination of dramatic drop offs, abundant sea life along the walls, crystal clear water with up to 40m visibility and the frequent presence of all big predators.
Sharks are common with grey reef sharks, black tip tail sharks, and nurse sharks being most common.
Hammerhead sharks are also common and both tiger sharks and bull sharks frequent the island group.
Hopefully we will be able to present a short diving video from diving Caicos bank on this blog shortly.
