Coming in from open sea heading for Tromsö you pass the island Kvalöy.
Many Norwegians consider Kvalöy to be the island with best circumstances for randoskiing. Having this in mind when passing the mountain on the picture tempted my fantasy.
Rystraumen has a bad reputation and tidal streams run strong through this strait (6,5-7kts during springtide). Subsequently reading the Norwegian Pilot vol 6 and the tidetables before passage is mandatory. I passed with an eastsetting current of around 3,3kts and allthough loads of whirlpools, the autopilot managed great.
After Rystraumen the passage up to Tromsö is in well protected waters on the east side of Kvalöy.
