This is a complicated topic filled with emotions and hysteria, but it´s also important and dangerous. The main problem is to try to find objective truth from the area you are passing. The majority of cruisers we were talking to on the topic of "piracy in Venezuelan waters" told us "stay away from all Venezuelan waters", "they also attack you in open sea", "don´t tell your route to any officials since they can pass info to pirates" and so on.
Going to the Caribbean Security Net who has all reported cases in the whole Caribbean region was more reassuring with few cases in open sea and with a decline of piracy in general in Venezuelan waters from 2022.
The regions of highest risk is the Gulf of Paria (between Venezuela and Trinidad),the Sugar Coast (northwest of Gulf of Paria) and also the waters around Margarita Island. The offhsore islands of La Blanquilla and Los Roques is considered safe and cruisers visit and praise both these groups of islands today.
Upon departure we contacted the Dutch Coastguard for the ABC islands who regularly patrol these waters and gave them our float plan. We also subscribed to the alert system of the Caribbean Security net and once out at sea ,we were running silent without AIS as well as our steaming light switched off during darkness.
The first night we passed through a whole fleet of fishingboats without any problems and since then we always had some cargoship on the radar but no more fishingboats.
After 3 days and nights we made landfall safely in Bonaire and sent a message of our safe arrival to the Dutch Coastguard.
The passage itself was a pleasure with a well behaved Dora Mac and calm seas.
