Edvard Teach and more
Fed by the sea Beaufort NC has it’s exciting history closely related to the North Atlantic Ocean. Living from the sea, mainly fishing, it was also for a time hangout for pirates the most famous Edvard Teach and Otway Burns. Edvard Teach was active in the 18th century. His ship, Queen Anns Revenge, was originally a French ship delivering slaves from Africa. Edvard Teach , more famous as Blackbeard, seized the ship on the Atlantic while on a delivery trip. Years later he ran aground on the banks outside Beaufort. Some decades ago the ship was found by a diving team just south of the Beaufort inlet. Lot’s of things from the ship are now in the Maritime museum of Beaufort NC.
I was most surprised by the canons where half of them had a mark showing they were made by a Swedish gun factory. Obviously guns were sold internationally also in those days.
During WW-II the German submarine U-352 was sunk by depth charges from a US coast guard ship outside Beaufort NC. Today the submarine is a popular dive site and porslain with the zwastika as well as portraits of Adolf Hitler have been restored now also in the museum.
The fishing trawler typical for the area has an underwater hull similar to Dora Mac. Diesel Ducks though has a deeper keel and Alaska Trollers are the raw model.
