Tuesday 16th June – Isola Vulcano, Isole Eolie (Aeolian Islands)

The anchorage was quiet last night and we slept well.  This morning we had breakfast in the cockpit facing the island as the light wind had turned us around over night – so we had breakfast with a view of the active crater puffing out its smoke.

We were thinking of moving on to one of the other islands, so after refilling the fuel tank from our jerry cans, we went off to the supermarket for a few supplies.

Just by the chilled food counter, we were hailed by Lisa and David of Gyatso who we first met in Lagos.  We had seen a Tayana in the anchorage on the eastern side last night but were unable to read the name on the side and we wondered if it could be them – well it was.  It was great to bump into them again and hear of their travels and we spent quite a while with them before finishing our shopping.  Lisa has been here before for a week or so and was able to give us some information on the anchorages around the other islands where she has been.

When we were back at Pyxis I sat on the transom to rinse the black off my feet before going on board and the couple from the next yacht popped over in their dinghy on their way to shore to say hello and warn us about the jelly fish – Trevor had been stung and had an impressive weal on his arm.  They are travelling with two other boats, all of whom wintered in Lagos this year so we spent ages chatting with them about it.

By now it was 3pm and so we had a late lunch and relaxed on board – we'll stay over tonight and see about moving on tomorrow... it is so beautiful here and with these views its hardly an imposition.  I spent the afternoon sitting in the cockpit painting it.

The only down-side is that Tuesday is clearly charter night at Vulcano;  we have had several SunSail boats arrive and anchor on top of us – some of them almost literally.  Perhaps we should have moved on after all.  I'm going to put out fenders before we go to bed!
