Ayamonte

Thursday 13th March – Ayamonte 37:12.692N 7:24.433W
Today we explored Ayamonte.
After a late breakfast, reading the pilot book ready for onwards passage, we set off in search of the town and supermarket.
Within a short distance of the marina we found a chandlery so Richard felt that things were looking up. A little bit further on we found a large supermarket with great potential for some serious stocking up, and then we found a park next door…
We went into the park and saw a lovely selection of flowers in the nearby flowerbed (e.g. bird of paradise and beautiful lilies) but then spotted a large aviary in the middle of the park in which were parrots.
We then ventured further…
… and found a tiger in a large enclosure; then we found a pair of lions; and then zebras. Rounding the corner we walked into a large bear coming the other way – fortunately he was the other side of a glass window, and beyond the bear enclosure – baboons. Pleased to say that they were all were in quite large enclosures and looked relaxed and in good condition.
Returning the other way there was a small lake with a swan, some ducks, and terrapins on the water, and some ducks, geese and a peacock and peahen on the shore.
Altogether an unexpected surprise.
After that we walked into town and found attractive squares and side streets. Sadly the fish market was closed. On the way we saw Peter coming back into the marina on his rib-boat – he had been off under the bridge and up river exploring.
After a late lunch, and having caught up with the washing, we set off for the supermarket. Two trips later we seem to have restocked with the basics.
This evening we have celebrated our entry to Spain with the prawns and baguette routine, a bottle of Rioja and a quiet night in.
