Cala de Santa Ponsa, Mallorca (Deià and Valldemossa)

Tuesday 5th August – Cala de Santa Ponsa, Mallorca (Deià and Valldemossa) 39:30.867N 2:28.181E
Today we hired a scooter and went off exploring this north western corner of Mallorca by road - the scenery and coastline of the Sierra de Tramuntana is very rugged and spectacular.
We started with a ride up the north west coast road and stopped at a small place called Port des Canonge. The road down (and up again) to the tiny village was very small and very winding - all tight hair pin bends. Riding pillion it was my job to check for cars coming the other way each time we reached a bend – fortunately there were very few cars. We had a good view over the bay from the village but decided it was not a place we could have found suitable anchorage with Pyxis.
After that we returned to the slightly larger main road and carried on to Deià. Here we parked up and had a walk around. It is a very picturesque town in the hills. Well, we now know where Bob Geldof is spending his summer holiday – he was on the table next to us when we stopped to rehydrate in the very hot weather. As it was now early afternoon, we wandered down the street and found a small restaurant for a little tapas before moving on to Valldemossa.
Valldemossa is famous for having Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones owning a house nearby, which may explain the prices in the clothes shops and boutiques there. Anyway, they were not around (that we saw anyway) so after a bit of window shopping and a coffee, we made our way cross country back to Paguera via Puigpunyent.
Once again the road was packed with small winding hair-pin bends through the mountains with steep sides – it was a good excuse to stop and take pictures. Some of the ‘farm-houses’ that we passed looked very well appointed!
After a long day we finished off with some Chinese food in Santa Ponsa before heading back to Pyxis very late. Fortunately Pyxis was still where we left her at anchor and no one had parked close beside us J
