Hi Folks,
Big day out yesterday, though its still blowing a
hoolie here we are all hunkered under a hill out the way and the wind gen is
pumping loads of amps into our batteries it hasn't done so since the good old
Atlantic trades , so we wont need to generate any power today from any noisy
source.
We set off in the afternoon for the other
side of the Island in the dingy, full equipped with all the long range stuff
req, Radio extra fuel ect , it took 35 mins to get there and we parked our boat
in Bora Bora yacht club, it a restaurant , with a couple of mooring buoys around
.. a sort of drive by Mc Donald's Bora Bora stylie .. take a buoy and dinning in
the restaurant type of thing , anyway we then set off up the mountain trail with
some wrought instructions from the tourist information centre , they were spot
on half an hr later we were at the gun emplacements , a sort of boyz thing with
very dramatic views across the NW side of Bora Bora for the girlies, Lyn still
has the knackered so it just Ruth that had to put up with us blokes droning
on about these 7" guns , which considering they have been left in the open since
1941 when the USA seized the island and built a runway as a staging
post in the war against Japan, very interesting , built in 1908 and 1919
these old guns were probably pulled out of storage after being taken of an
old WW1 battle ship , anyway there were built in the New York Ordnance factory
and you could see all the details on the breeches including ser No ,
fascinating for me and Ike but a tad boring for everybody else , nice lumps of
bronze still left on them as well , a good set of 48" stilton's would have
gotten me some real momentous of this place .....
Back down the hill and into the dingy
for a real good soaking on the way back , same as the shopping trip but twice as
far ..
We hope to get up the mountain tomorrow but
are still waiting for the winds to die down .. forecast though looks grim with
at least another week of this sort of weather, some have mad a run for the cook
islands but with poor anchorages in these Islands a tad unwise, bearing in mind
what happened to the yachts in Pamerston , the bigger boats that is over 50ft
will just find it uncomfortable but some of the 30ft'ers most with
families of one or two young kids this would be quite an horrendous trip as
the seas are confused and in the 4 to 5 metre band ..
Anyway its another lazy day and time to try
and prod the gen set back into life ! still looking not to good on that front
..
The even wetter
