Hi Folks,
The day started with more trips through the reef to
bring fresh water back to the boat, we shifter 220 litre and have filled one
tank completely and the other three quarters so it remains to complete the fill
tomorrow morning .
In the afternoon we all went ashore and
walked/climbed up and over to the other bay , walking through palm trees on the
lower level we were reminded of how dangerous these trees are when two nuts fell
just off the path and landed with a real thump on the ground, apparently the no
one killer in these parts is a "nut on the head" and this one doesn't com from
Glasgow , the large nuts which are about the size of a football can fall up to
sixty feet onto the unsuspecting victim and apparently not many survive
!
The path climbed on a series of switchbacks
up the side of the steep hillside, through palms , lemon, and mango trees until
adventual we arrived at the ridge between the two bays and boy what a view of
our bay we are anchored in , this is the bay that Robby Louis Stevenson visited
whilst cruising around the Marquises and spent some time here writing , doesn't
say what book he was on at the time though !
Becky,Lyn and Ike went back down , foraging
for nuts mangoes and lemons , Rob ,Ruth and myself pushed on down into the
other valley and bay , a small village appeared out of the undergrowth with
concrete roads and more Landrover 110 , (Roger your product is plentiful out
here) the usual greeting we have come to expect in recent trips to these
villages greeted us, two local dogs stuck together in an uncompromising position
with there tongs hanging out waiting for the swelling to go down so they could
extract from each other, village life going on around them as normal must be the
norm in these parts.
Anyway we found the little village shop
and purchased some essentials like tonic water and beer , then started back as
it was getting late and as the sun sets at 1800 it would have been unwise to
have been scrabbling up hill and down dale in the dark , with the thought in the
back of your mind that you could be on the end of a large nut , I suppose it a
bit of roll reversal with a coconut shy in reverse with the humans as the target
and mother nature deciding when to drop !
We arrived back at 1720 a round trip of about two
and a half hrs , the wind had kept the NoNos at bay with the assistance of
liberal doses of mossy cream , long trousers , shirt and walking boots
.
We then striped off to our swimmers for the
trip back through the surf to the boat , we were on an invite over to Rhythm
that evening to sample more of Ikes home brew which is now maturing by the day
into a fine vintage , it certainly felt like it later on !
An anithatised crew ..
