Day Eight Galapagos
22/05/08
Bartholomew Island
Hi Folks,
Very early start this morning after a very roily
night at the anchorage , no wind just a big pacific swell rolling into the bay
.
It was a four o/c kick off with a water taxi into
the shore, clambered on a bus and drove to the other side of Santa Cruz Island
to pick up a small cruise boat that took us to Bartholomew Island , which
incidentally was the island used to shoot the Galapagos scenes in the film
"Master and Commander"
This is a volcanic island with stunning scenery ,
and a few penguins ,it was a three hr motor to this remote island a few hrs
walking the island then swimming and snorkelling in the bay .
Back on the road again to Santa Cruz Island
and a 42 km bus ride back to Academy bay.
Got back to the boat just in time, we had a
light evening meal washed up the dishes , Ruth popped her head up to look
out and noticed a large cruise boat drifting into our stern , it was all
action stations , tooting of horns , starting the engine and releasing the aft
anchor to get away from this large steel vessel , they put there large ribs
between the two vessels keep them apart , the vessels separated but it was a bit
touch and go ,
We had a similar incident last night but not
on this scale , they came over very apologetically once we were away from each
other , the problem is they come into the anchorages to pick up passengers for
long island tours and spend too much time looking at boarding there passengers
and not where they are drifting !
Anyway he leaves at eleven this evening so we
are remaining vigilant as he is still laying across our stern anchor ... watch
this space , well done to all of us on the collision avoidance as those buggers
weren't paying attention until they heard the fog horn
!
