Friday 18th June – Day 12 At Sea (Lini’s Journal )

There was a realisation early this morning that we are only a few
days away from the Portuguese Azores and despite all my good
intentions to study the introductory language course again, we’re in
danger of making landfall before I have jogged my memory as to how to
even utter good morning. As the sun rose lesson one commenced: Bom
Dia!
Lini is officially a slug! In my defence things were too noisy to
sleep on my first off watch last night and although horizontal in the
sea berth this morning I couldn’t actually attempt sleep until the SSB
nets were over. I then fell however into the deepest land of nod, not
waking until lunchtime with the bread still a proving dough: I quickly
made some wraps and left the dough for tomorrow.
Bermuda vegetables are all imported and with fluctuating
temperatures in our freezer used as a fridge they are not lasting
well. Last night I cooked a large pot of those that had reached the
‘use it or chuck it’ time, but now I have to disguise them in three
meals. The first offering tonight came with pasta and a dollop of
cheese sauce for those without rocks. Although we still have plenty of
fresh produce as well as tins if need be, I must spread out the more
interesting supplies to avoid living on cabbage, onions, squash and
apples for the last few days.
It was Si’s turn to be the slug for much of the afternoon. How
typical there is no sign of another boat in days but as soon as I’m
sprawled naked in the sunshine with my iPod we have to take avoiding
action to prevent a collision with ‘Golden Hind’. We recognised this
replica of Sir Francis Drake’s ship from an anchorage in St. Lucia.
Now, here it was again bouncing like a cork only a stone’s throw away
and sailing no closer to the wind than 60°: They will make very slow
progress to the Azores if the wind angle doesn’t shift.
