The early morning dark cloud delivered only a few drops of much
needed rain, so the drought continues with yellowy brown hues to the
islands. We dropped anchor briefly on Union Island so Si could check
us in again to St. Vincent and the Grenadines then we threaded our way
round Mayreau and back to Tobago Cays. I was quite expecting the vivid
colours I’d remembered to have been a fantasy and everything today to
be in ordinary shades. But no, once again my jaw dropped at the
astounding beauty of the islands and reefs. As we dropped our anchor
between two other Hallberg Rassys I heard whistling and looking up saw
Festina Lente just a couple of boats away. What a great surprise! I
was wondering if we would ever catch up with Phillip and Lynda again
as they were having to race on ahead to get to Antigua for the 17th
and the arrival of their son. Phillip jumped in the dinghy and came
over, inviting us for tea later on.
As soon as lunch had settled we took the new underwater digital
camera to take photos of the turtles and were soon following our
friends around, gliding through the water with them, snapping away on
the camera just in case these wonderful memories should somehow ever
dwindle. Beaming ear to ear we sprawled in the sand for a while before
bouncing back on the choppy seas via Festina Lente to see what time
the kettle was going on. With the tea already being made we clambered
straight aboard dripping salty water and sand everywhere. Had I looked
more closely before we were introduced to Phillip’s sister and husband
I would have realised I’d already met Mike and Louise at Hamble River
Sailing Club racing on Wednesday nights: I hadn’t ever realised they
were related. The rest of the afternoon raced by as we chatted over
tea and Lynda’s flapjacks. Si and I then bid our farewells, leaving
them to sail round to Mayreau for the night. We plan to keep eachother
informed of our whereabouts in view of catching up and also exchange
top tips of places to see.
Si set up the BBQ on the transom after sundowners while I rustled
up suitable food. Our wonderful day ended quietly with our books.
