Brindabella's Web Diary

A soggy foot and rain pounding on the coachroof woke me this
morning. Rain was dripping through a vented hatch above me. The day
was grey. Low, heavy cloud filled the sky above and rain pelted
horizontally into the boat; we ate breakfast below for the first time
in half a year. Simon picked up wifi from Foxy’s on the shore and
checking out the weather online said there would be no change for a
day or so. He spent the rest of the day checking the weather sites
were set up ok for being at sea and reading a continual update of
Australia playing in the 20/20 cricket. I settled myself into a
corner and commenced a day of continued mending on the sprayhood. What
a shame we removed it yesterday though as without it the companionway
was open to the elements and we had to close it together with all the
hatches and ports of course. It was like a sauna inside Brindabella.
To make my thoughts about offshore sailing a little more positive I
played ‘Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway’ by Susan Jeffers on my iPod
while I sewed and will now brainwash myself into believing I’m capable
of sailing through anything that arises! I’m a strong believer in the
power of positive thinking.
I stopped sewing to make herb and garlic wraps for lunch as we
couldn’t get ashore to buy bread, then continued sewing until making
cottage pie, braised red cabbage and cherry crumble (for the stoneless
crew) for dinner. My sweetie treats come in the form of a caramel rice
cake now and if I really need a chocolate fix a watery Options hot
chocolate seems to hit the spot at about half a gram of fat. Cooking
is all a bit of a palaver these days too and I had to boil the fat out
of the mince first with none of those delicious onions sautéd in olive
oil to start the dish. I can get away with a very lean, incinerated
burger on the barbecue if I wring it out in several sheets of kitchen
towel though. Needless to say it’s about as tasty as the sole of my
shoe!
Luckily by evening the skies had cleared and we were able to eat on
deck; such a relief. Sudden rain stopped our cockpit cinema tonight
though while we frantically moved electrics below and set everything
back up for the second depressing half of Atonement. More heavy rain
and thunder passed over in the night with wild winds at times.
