What a relief things were brighter as we sailed round the island
into Horta, which looked very picturesque from the sea: It had not
been an enjoyable trip. We prepared lines and fenders and moored on
the fuel dock, unfortunately arriving at lunch time. We filled up with
diesel and had lunch while waiting for customs to reopen; a lengthy
processes with the football world cup on! Several hours later we
finally rafted off two other boats along the harbour wall: The buzzy
marina was packed with European boats returning home. Just in front of
us were ‘Island Drifter’ who we’d talked to each day on the SSB net
from Bermuda but had never met. We were at last able to put jolly
faces to voices and we were invited for drinks this evening. Sleepy
crew grabbed forty winks while Si was delighted to find free wifi.
Mike and Helen were sailing ‘Island Drifter’ back to England with
their friend Marjorie. As the sun sunk slowly behind the town we
settled in their cockpit with wine while sharing tales of the
Caribbean. They very kindly asked us to stay for supper which is
always rather embarrassing for the stones and I with a restricted
diet. The ladies said it would be no problem though and rustled up two
delicious pasta dishes followed by home poached pears in red wine
which we washed down with lots of red wine swiftly retrieved from
Brindabella. Yummy, scrummy! It was a lovely evening with more great
new friends.
