Nevis

17.08.755N 062.37.979W We left St.Kitts and headed down the 10 miles to the sister island of Nevis.
Perched Pelican!
Not “Ben Nevis” – only 3200 feet! Here by chance we met Peter who is a brother to friends we had spent time with in Maine and he and his wife Carol drove us to a beach bar then a restaurant for dinner.
Oualie Beach at the north end of Nevis The Port Authority laid 100 moorings on the east side of the island in 2009 but unfortunately they have not been maintained and we picked up 5 moorings before I was happy with ours- a quick snorkel was revealing broken thimbles and worn swivels! On Friday we wondered into the small capital Charlestown which has been unspoilt by modern development and much neater and tidier than St.Kitts and the houses appear to be smarter and more prosperous. Nevis has a population of about 10,000 and St.Kitts 40,000 yet there were 32 murders last year! Both islands appear very friendly but they have a problem with gang warfare which is not racial but presumably just the result of boredom. Peter and Carol collected us and drove us to Montpelier ( where Admiral Nelson married Fanny Nisbet ! ) which is now a beautiful ‘plantation hotel’ www.montpeliernevis.com We enjoyed exceedingly potent rum punches ( one was more than enough! )
Banyan tree Then we went to their lovely house for dinner; they rent it out and it is for sale so if you need a break in the weather! www.nevisislandtime.com View of St Kitts from their deck |
