On our last day at Oyster Bay there was some team racing in Sonars being held and I think there must have been a team from the Royal Northern and Clyde YC.!

We left at 08.30 and dawdled west towards New York; watching a fleet of Star Class Yachts preparing for a race; there were about 80 of them, some international insignia so it may have been the world championships!

This time for our trip through the ‘Big Apple’ it was warm and sunny and a few yachts were gathering to catch the tide at Hell’s Gate.

There is no denying the scale of everything and the sheer size of the buildings is impressive but we felt no compulsion to stop or visit.

The trip down the East River soon propels you through New York Harbour and into the Bay where we followed the channels for Sandy Hook to head south down the New Jersey shore.

We were grabbing a ‘weather window’ and the wind was sometimes strong enough to sail and sometimes we motorsailed to keep up speed through the night. The coastline has a few shallow harbours but nothing ideal for yachts and to see the lights of Atlantic City, where we could have stopped to gamble or take in a show, you would not think that the world has an energy crisis! At night the Trump Towers are lit up and another sky scraper has continually changing colours all over its walls!

We rounded Cape May about 24 hours after departure and pushed on up Delaware Bay with a fair wind and a fair tide. The forecast was for NE winds gusting 25 so we were keen to make shelter of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal before the tide turned against us.

When we came down the bay everything was grey; the sea, the sky and the fog. Today everything seemed brown as the river run off after all the storms seemed to tinge everything. Keeping an eye out for debris we had a fast run up the bay and treated ourselves to a night in Summit North Marina with dinner and live music. Arrived at 17.30 hours with 212 miles logged.
