It was an uncomfortable night anchored in Simpson Bay and this was not in the worst swells- I do ask why some people had been anchored there all week!
We were up even earlier than planned and lifted the anchor at 03.45 and hoisted the mainsail. However the only wind was from astern at about 6 knots so we motored all day across a calm sea but with a long 8ft cross swell. A beautiful sunny day but no fish taking our lures although we saw two large whales – probably humpbacks – heading south.

Eventually we entered the shallow channel between Virgin Gorda and Richard Branson’s Necker Island and anchored in the North Sound at 17.00 hrs, just off the Saba Rock Resort.

Despite the name the British Virgin Isles its very Americanised and that means that the nearby resorts of Bitter End and Saba Rock are very smart, well run and expensive!
