The holiday was over! With some regrets we said goodbyes, up anchored and sailed round to the west side of Antigua where we dropped anchor near the entrance to Jolly Harbour Marina.

We were underway again by 7am and goosewinged in perfect conditions, 16-24 knots wind to the south side of Nevis and there a radio call from ‘Shian’ informed us that it was Carnival in St.Kitts so we carried on and headed to Basseterre and berthed in the small marina next to the enormous cruise ships!   www.portzante.com

The noise from the Carnival reached the marina so we headed off with Paul and Janie into the small town.

Ballahoo restaurant where we had dinner!                                                              Street food!

The heavy Caribbean beat assaulted the ears while the eyes were amazed by the colours and crowds of people all dancing or just bobbing to the music!

We found Ballahoo Restaurant with a veranda overlooking the Circus ( supposedly based on Piccadily ! ) where conversation was impossible due to the noise but the view was ideal! Several floats appeared which consisted of a trailer with a two story structure of dubious stability, a band, a “ singer” and various hangers on plus probably over 200sq.ft of speakers powered by a 100kva diesel genset hitched behind and all towed by a farm tractor! Needless to say neither tractor nor generators could be heard above the “music”. The noise was indescribable and even in the restaurant you could feel your body vibrating to the noise! Whole families were out in the streets and many dressed up in fancy costume. Surprisingly, perhaps because it was the 2nd day, it was all quiet by midnight!
