We left Block Island just after 0700 to catch the wind and tide west towards “The Race” and for a while we had a couple of knots in our favour but we knew it couldn’t last! I had hoped to visit the Connecticut River but after 2 recent deluges the river levels along the north shore of Long Island Sound were at “flood stage” and the bay was coloured pale brown with all the run off and there were continual warnings of tree trunks, telegraph poles, dead cows etc floating around!

We headed back to the South shore and just made Port Jefferson as it went dark at 19.30  with 80 miles completed. We were there in June at a weekend when the anchorage was packed with all sizes of boats but now there were only 2 other yachts anchored!

A very peaceful place that deserves exploring at some point- further down the bay is a large town, ferry port and major industrial site but the anchorage to the west of the entrance is very natural.

Monday morning was bright and windless and we motored west to Oyster Bay again to once more meet up with Ian McCurdy, son of “Moonbeam’s” designer.

The next stage is through New York and down the New Jersey coast to the Delaware but current wind conditions are unsuitable so we are happy to stay where we are in attractive surroundings and the temp is about 80F day and 65F at night!
