Pulpit Harbour to Isle au Haut 20 miles logged
Another windless but hot and sunny day
We picked up an honesty mooring in the harbour- here you put 20$ in a plastic bottle fixed to the mooring bridle and there must have been over 100$ in the bottle!
Isle au Haut now has an all year round population of about 60, less than a quarter of its heyday when it exported canned lobster to London in the latter half of the 19th century.
We went ashore for a walk and were amused by the old cars in various states of repair but as there only about 5 miles of road on the island and there is no regular car ferry there is no need for smart vehicles.!
We loved the smell of the pinewoods and the first blue berries were just starting to arrive. There is an excellent general store and a lovely church and in the current glorious weather it appears a perfect existence but in the winter storms it must be pretty wild.
On the way back to Moonbeam we met two young lads sorting their lobster catch and we bought 2 one pound lobsters for 10$ which we cooked for dinner!
A young couple came aboard for a drink after dinner and they had bought their smart 32ft sloop for 5000$ and spent the same again doing it up and had sailed her up from Annapolis during their 4 month “ off duty” leave from work.
