We hired a car (Seat 1.4D in red)and set off!
Surprisingly the first place of call was the historic city of Oviedo.
San Salvador Cathedral was built in the 9th Century by Alfonso the second who was the first pilgrim to go Santiago de Compostela. There are many relics!
the altar was 15th Century and magnificent

In the square near by was another church: Iglesia de San Isidoro

After lunch in one of the shade dappled streets we set off into the hills——a road map would have been useful. Lush, green and hilly but very few livestock.
We finally went back to the coast to Cudillero. A lovely fishing port, fish being landed by local boats and a small village with lots of restaurants. In full summer it must be the proverbial honey pot

The to complete the circuit we returned via Aviles. The “historico” centre took some finding but was delightful with plenty of squares and narrow streets to wander around.

The town is either side of the river—it is a major port and there are enormous steel works, A bit like Port Talbot as viewed from the M4

However there was also the real taste of Spain
