We had endured three days and nights of howling wind with seagulls flying backwards and sleepless nights and all the while good sailing conditions on the Portugese coast were going begging.
We spoke to a Yacht skipper who was running the marina cafe/bar/restaurant and he said that if we could get twenty miles west by running downwind using just a handkerchief of a jib, then we would be out of the wind funnel and there would be little wind. We, along with a French boat called Eroica (yes, without the 't'!) decided to leave the next (Thursday) morning. The wind gusted through at 35 knots in the early part of the night but at about 0500 all went calm---only 20 knots. We left at 0545 and are now approaching the Portugese coast and we will revisit Lagos in the morning. We have had wind from behind all day at a maximum of 20 knots and mostly about 14 knots. We have left behind a forecast of 35 knots for Cadiz and another 5 days of the levanter----it is meant to clear the straits and Cadiz on Tuesday!
