Round the Island

We were told we could see the island by hiring a car for the day so yesterday we took a VW polo and set off. The roads are newly improved and superbly engineered, with hairpin bends and steep gradients all protected with crash barriers. We toured the national park at the top of the mountain, (1487 m) it was misty cooler and covered with scented pine trees, with views across to Mount Tiede on Tenerife. Lots of the valleys had disused terraces, as if there had been more rainfall at some stage. We have been surprised by the lack of wildlife here, however we saw lots of goats yesterday.
We went to the other villages on the island and were surprised by how small they were as the Tourist Office had said a couple of them were "tourist hotspots". This island is the greenest and prettiest of the ones we have seen, with pines at the top, lots of aloe vera plants and date palms, however all the buses and ferries start at San Sebastian, so this is the hub of the island.
We had lunch in Casa Eugenia, run by an old lady who has trestle tables in her house and cooks for visitors! There is no choice of meal, we had a bean stew (apparently eaten by the poor during the civil war) with boiled vegetables and salad, followed by a rice pudding and some sort of digestif. The room was full of Spanish families and the walls filled with pictures of her from various magazines and newspapers, obviously a " National Treasure". The lunch was inexpensive but not Mark's favourite meal -but it was an experience!
We then came back to the marina via the tiny airport, the ferries are used more than aeroplanes. This would be a good place for a walking holiday or a short break. There is a hydrofoil which takes 35 minutes from Tenerife and a Parador in San Sebastian.
