We sailed down to Cowes on Friday morning arriving at about 1300 where we were given a warm welcome and visited by the Commodore of the RYS.

We had been given strict instructions about the RYS flag etiquette and Laurence had been appointed “Flags”.
The RYS raise their ensign at 0800 and lower it at 2000. All boats in the berthen shall do likewise. Unfortunately the previous night at Yarmouth had resulted in abject failure with the ensign remaining raised all night——the whisky had taken its toll.
At 0800 precisely the ensign was raised

and Laurence was not to be found wanting this time
and neither was our neighbour or any of the other boats
On the other side of us a member of the RYS was setting the standard of warp coiling——immaculate.
