We hired a car with Oyster Moon and did a drive around Gran Canaria.
We took the 'high road'' out of Puerto de Mogan and looked back into the village/town.(1).
We went to the north of the island via Las Palmas, where the 250 ARC boats leave from on the 17 November to cross the Atlantic to St Lucia, and then drove down the mountainous west coast---very high, steep and twisty with hairpin bends. We had pulled off the road to take this photograph just before the articulated lorry that is in the photogarph came round the bend and went on down the hill! (2)
In the more fertile areas the flatter land was covered with tented frames and netting which we think provided shelter from the sun for the crops of bananas, avocados and other fruit. The ''tented'' areas covered many acres and it must be big industry for the island.(3)
Puerto de Mogan is a pretty village and is known as the ''Venice of Gran Canaria'' because of the narrow streets and bridges over watercourses. There are a lot of visitors coached in to visit, particularly so on market day when one of the largest markets on the Canary Islands is held. (4).
When we drove to Las Palmas we went via Maspalomas which is on the south east tip of the island and renowned for it's sand dunes. We were not disappointed----it looked like the Sahara desert beside the sea. Not a place to go on holiday if you want a short easy walk to the beach (5).The photograph was taken from the hotel complex.
