15 January
We stayed overnight in Picton and caught the 1400 ferry to Wellington
Picton is also a major exporting port for timber from the South Island
There was truck load of cows making the journey with us
and this time the sun shone over the sounds
a few sailing boats out and about
and the leading marks were clearly visible
we were overtaken by the Inter Islander ferry as we passed through the narrowest part of the channel entering Wellington
and then having found a place to park we had supper in a restaurant called Floriditas in Cuba Street with Laura Macdonald (Helen’s goddaughter) who used to live near us in Somerset and Gemma.
A fun evening although we nearly ended up doing the washing up when Mark had a malfunction with the credit cards he had with him!!
We returned to the freedom camp site 20 km outside Wellington where we stayed on 15 December on our way down.
We loved the South Island—so much to see and do, few people except in Queenstown at New Year and a real fun place to be. The weather had been amazing with a couple of wet days when we arrived, a wet night at New Year and at wet night during the sandfly attack; otherwise mainly full sun with a few days of cloud in the morning but clear by lunch time and temperatures in the mid twenties centigrade. We were sorry to leave.
