We had a good night's sleep only interrupted by the
howling wind. The levanter is now well set in with very strong easterly winds
forecast to blow for a week!! The levante is preceded by a heavy swell,
cold damp air, poor visibility and low cloud which forms around the high
hills---all of which we had!!
There may be an opportunity to creep downwind along
the coast towards Lagos later this week to take advantage of favourable wind up
the Portugese coast but if not we will have to sit it out---at least we are away
from the Gibraltar Straits where the wind is forecast at over 40 knots
and Cadiz is lovely city. We visited
the Cathedral and also went to the Torre Tavira which was one of many watch
towers, but as the tallest it was the official watch
tower, in the city where the merchants used to look out for their ships
coming over the horizon from America and then hoist the appropriate signal
flags. This is now a ''camera obscura'' which projects a live image onto a
concave horizontal screen (inverted satellite dish) in a darkened room
which is rotated manually to give one a 360 degree live view of the
city.
We may get to know this City quite
well!
