''Instability'' is the term used by the Italian weather forecasters to describe the current general weather situation.
Three hours after posting our blog last night the downwind sail came to an end as we received repeated gale warnings for the sea areas directly ahead of us and into which we were headed. We changed course and went north with the wind increasing to 24 knots. At about 0300 it died and we altered course to head towards our intended destination putting the pole out yet again but on the other tack. The main gales appear to have gone south of Sardinia and Sicily. We have motored most of the day and as we approach the Sardinian coast we have now been advised that we may have thunderstorms and associated gusts---all due to instability!!
On the plus side the autopilot has been great following our attempt at recalibration.
