Some Australians we met suggested we came here rather than Cairns as we were more likely to see "The Real Australia". It was a good idea as we have seen some interesting places in the last week.
Firstly we have been trying to have an MRI scan on my knee, which has involved bureaucracy, a hospital visit - only to be told it was not possible as it was not an emergency - a private visit to a GP and finally a scan. All the places were miles into the suburbs so the time involved has been frustrating. The results show a large tear in the cartilage, so an operation looms, probably in Singapore as it will take six weeks to see a Consultant here, and then book the op.

Saturday night in Townsville was fun, all the girls in short dresses and huge shoes staggering around the streets and ranch hands in jeans and white tshirts drinking beer. There are a number of clubs and bars in Flinders Street. We went to the Anglican Cathedral for communion on Sunday, where we were given a warm welcome. They had goat gates on the doors as it was built before the town expanded into the suburbs.

Yesterday we hired a minibus with Camelot and went to the Billabong Centre, where we saw koalas, wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, cockatoos, some horrible snakes and huge crocodiles, all in one morning. Then we drove out to Charters Towers, a gold mining town 120 kilometres from Townsville. We therefore saw a bit of the outback, road trains (huge trucks with 4 or 5 trailers behind) and the well preserved mining town with banks and stock exchange buildings built in the boom time, lots of Victorian architecture.
