We have managed to find the Newquay of Portugal! It has been cold, damp and very windy here since we arrived on Friday, gusts of 60 knots have been forecast for today so we are here for a day or two, till the wind and more specifically the swell goes down.
We walked into Nazarre hoping to find an old town but it is a major holiday resort, even though a very deep trench coming inshore (Chanel de Nazare which is 2,700 metres deep until about 80m before the harbour entrance, where it shallows to 80m!)This deep trench flattens the swell which makes it a safe all weather entry however further along the beach the water is shallower thus there is swell and undertow off the beach. Plenty of lifeguards on the beach for the swimmers.
We asked in the Marina office about restaurants and went out with Ian and Carol for supper. The whole meal was delicious in attractive surroundings on the edge of the fishing harbour in good company and the red wine was €4.50 a bottle!
